Urban Garden update #4 (Hydroponic Pepper table)

I just got done with the flood and drain pepper table. Well, almost done. The table will actually only grow 20 pepper plants(over 50 right now). The reservoir will house lettuce and spinach, grow on a 2" styrofoam raft. So when it's all done, one reservoir will be feeding two grow beds. I'm not even sure if this will work, but I have a pretty good feeling it will. I'm using botanicare coco grow compressed coir mixed with silica stone for a medium. The containers are 9"x9"x5" tall plastic mesh. They will be sitting on top of a 1/4" coconut mat, where the roots will grow underneath. The plants will be grown using botanicare CNS-17 coco nutrients. For supplements, we're using aquashield and CSN ripe.

  1. Very nice. I have been wanting to do hydro peppers in my basement, but have not got around to doing it. What type of lighting do you use and how much does it cost you to run it per month? Again, great job. It looks great!

  2. BTW, are those black pearl peppers?

  3. Thanks PepperGuy! I use a 600 watt high pressure sodium light to light the pepper table. It costs about $15 a month.

I've never heard of black pearl peppers? What a cool name. The peppers on the table are 11 different varieties. Bell peppers are(California Wonder, Golden California Wonder, Orange Sun, Purple Beauty and Diamond). The hot peppers are(Anaheim Chili, Ancho, Jalapeno M, Hungarian Wax, Pepperoncini and Long Slim Red Cayenne).

  4. I'm not sure if they will grow together because sweet peppers and hot peppers take different strengths of nutrient. On top of that, I'm growing five different varieties of lettuce, under the table, in the reservoir. Needless to say, it should be interesting. I'm getting ready to post the pics.

  5. I'm liking this! Last year I did Cayenne's, Habanero's, and Bell Pepper's in a Ebb/Flood system using the same reservoir (i.e. same nutrient strength). The Cayenne's and Hab's were prodigious - the Bell Pepper's unimpressive.

  6. That's what I'm afraid of! I know hot peppers like a higher nutrient level then sweet peppers(bell peppers). So I'm trying to meet somewhere in the middle. Right now I'm running at 600 ppm. It's pretty low, but I don't want to go too high just yet, especially with the lettuce involved:~)
